Summer at NBA: Interns, Paper Planes, and Braves Wins

It’s been a full and fun start to summer at Niles Bolton Associates! We’ve welcomed new faces, revived some of our favorite traditions, and braved both the heat and the rain in true NBA spirit.

Kicking things off, ten summer interns joined the Atlanta office across our architecture, landscape architecture, planning, and interior design studios. They represent a range of top programs—including Auburn University, the University of Georgia, the Georgia Institute of Technology’s undergraduate and Master of Architecture programs, Northeastern University, and Clemson University’s Master of Architecture program. This talented group has brought fresh ideas, creative energy, and a wealth of curiosity to the office. We’re lucky to have them for the summer!

To keep the summer flying high, we held our 4th Annual Paper Airplane Challenge, a favorite NBA tradition—and this year, we took the competition outside for the first time. With open skies and plenty of room to launch, we saw everything from aerodynamic masterpieces to gravity-bound curiosities (including a few propeller-equipped designs that may have backfired). Principal Danny Fernandez even added flair with a rubber band–powered launch, delighting the crowd and proving once again that rules are more like… guidelines.

A huge thanks to everyone who folded, flew, and cheered our paper pilots on, and congratulations to the winners for most beautiful plane, most hideous plane, furthest flight, and second furthest flight.

From expert launches to crash landings, this year’s contest was full of laughs, creativity, and a little friendly competition. We definitely soared to new heights!

Later that week, we took the fun offsite for our annual Braves game outing, and while the forecast didn’t look promising, our team came prepared. Tailgating started in a sunny lot off I-75… until the skies opened up and brought what felt like a monsoon. Beach umbrellas, truck cabs, and sheer determination kept the party alive, with a playlist featuring Taylor Swift and Creed setting the tone.

Eventually, the rain let up, and the tailgate crew headed to the stadium (with a very well-spent $20 shuttle ride). Instead of soggy seats, the group gathered on the Coca-Cola Terrace and watched as the Braves fought back from behind. Tied in the 8th, scoreless in the 9th, and finally, a walk-off sacrifice fly by Austin Riley in the 10th—free baseball and a one-run win!

Despite the wild weather, 43 people turned out for a great night of baseball, laughs, and teamwork. Thanks to everyone who joined and especially to Kimberly Corentin and Nick Parker for helping rally the group!

From creative flights to extra innings, this summer has already delivered memorable moments. With our interns bringing fresh perspectives and more events ahead, we’re looking forward to everything the season still has in store.
